The Atomic bomb development called the Manhattan Project was initially put into place as a safe guard against Nazi Germany during World War II. Later it would be called to action by the United States military during World War II, but not for use on the Germans. It would be used on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To this day it is the only time that nuclear weapons have been used on another country and is still debated by many.
The development of the atomic bomb was not only about creating a powerful weapon for the military, but also about sending a message to the enemy. It was about being first in the race to produce nuclear arms and to give the United States a better position during World War II.
When the Japanese refused to surrender towards the end of World War II, the tough decision was made to drop the bomb on Hiroshima as a way of forcing the Japanese to surrender. Hiroshima was targeted because it held a number of industrial and military compounds. However, with the military objects the atomic bomb killed 80,000 civilians and another 60,000 people died from radiation poisoning after the fact.
The leader of the military and president of the United States addressed Japan after the bombing. He gave Japan an ultimatum and a chance to stop future bombings from occurring on more areas that were on our military hit list.
However, a few days later the Unites States was forced to bomb Nagasaki. It was another Japanese city with significant industrial and military significance. However, it was not their first target which was Kokura. After finding their first target obstructed by cloud coverage and running low on fuel, they bombed Nagasaki. The same devastation occurred and many civilians lost their lives. However, the Japanese soon surrendered to the United States.
