PHP Nuke is free software released under the GNU GPL License, which believes that software and software guides should be free. This software is a template of sorts that is customizable by the user. It is based on a combination of PHP and MSQL scripts and comes with a number of PHP-Nuke themes.
So, what does this software do? PHP-nuke gives you a web site that can provide a number of functions, but was intended to be an information portal. It is a content management system that is customizable and comes with PHP-Nuke themes that are already designed and ready for customization.
The developer, Francisco Burzi, had first created a site called the Linux Preview. This was a news site and as it began to grow Burzi became unhappy with the programming language he was using. When he discovered PHP code, he decided to create another site which led to the creation of PHP-Nuke and the PHP-Nuke themes.
The benefits of PHP are numerous. Instead of the script being read by a visitor's browser, the creator's web server is in control. This means that you do not have to worry about browser compatibility issues and it is less taxing on your servers CPU.
The only problem with PHP-Nuke is that it is hard to distinguish your web site design from the PHP-Nuke themes. However, if you have a good knowledge of the programming language, you can really do a number of things with the web site design.
As for the uses of a PHP-Nuke based web site, they are numerous. In addition to news servers and information portals, these web sites can function for public agencies, e-commerce, and e-learning systems.
The PHP language allows the web site to perform a number of functions such as authenticating users, serve different pages to people according to their browsers, and take info from web based forms to function in several different ways. These are just a few of the functions of the PHP language. |
